Advocacy Committee Update

Jared Olson
Vice-Chair, Advocacy Committee

As we welcome the vibrant change from winter into spring, the Michigan Municipal Executives (MME) organization and the MME Advocacy Committee remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating statewide for the municipal management profession. With a focus on informing elected officials, communities, and other professional organizations of its benefits, our committee and its members aim to highlight the invaluable benefits of the council-manager form of government.

In the spirit of collaboration and progress, MME continues to engage with stakeholders across Michigan, fostering dialogue and understanding about the council-manager model. Through targeted outreach efforts, MME aims to underscore the efficiency, transparency, and accountability inherent in this governance structure, which empowers elected officials to set policy direction while entrusting professional managers with the day-to-day operations of municipalities.

This spring, we will increase our efforts to provide educational resources and support to communities considering or currently utilizing the council-manager model. As we have attended the MParks Conference and several Michigan Municipal League events and staffed a vendor booth at the Michigan Townships Associations, the Advocacy Committee continues to target specific areas and events. By sharing best practices, case studies, and success stories, we have helped give local leaders the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed decisions that benefit their constituents and promote effective governance.

As advocates for excellence in municipal management, MME and the Advocacy Committee remain committed to championing the council-manager form of government as a proven pathway to sustainable, responsive, and visionary leadership.

We look forward to helping share our progress and Advocacy Committee work with the membership during the upcoming Summer Workshop in Marquette this July.

Together, we can cultivate stronger communities, foster innovation, and pave the way for a brighter future for all residents of Michigan.
